Health a critical factor as football season approaches

It can't be said enough how critical it is for high school athletes to be thoroughly tested for any preexisting medical conditions that may inhibit them from participating in a sport. Too often have athletes been given the "green light" to participate in a sport when, in actuality, they were never physically fit to begin with. An athlete's health is to be the number one priority for both parents who wish to have their children play and coaches who put them on the field. It's important to understand and recognize food intake, how to properly stay hydrated, hot weather conditions, and when a player is being pushed too hard. In very sad news, we've just seen our first death from summer football practice. A Cumberland County (N.C.) football player passed away on Saturday after going in to cardiac arrest during a practice after he complained about feeling "lightheaded." Keep health the number one priority both on and off the field. It could save a life.
