When Seattle Seahawks defensive end Greg Scruggs nominated his high school football coach, Steve Specht, for the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year award, he never expected him to win. So it came as a shock when he found out that Specht wound up taking home the award.
Scruggs attributes much of his success to his former coach at Xavier High School (Cinn.) and that without Specht, he wouldn't be where he is today.
“I owe it all to him,” said Scruggs. “He still keeps in touch with me. He checks on football, but at the end of the day he cares how I am as a person and what I’m doing with my life and where I’m going in life. He loves me like a son. The connection and bond that I have with him is what was the driving force behind me feeling so strongly about my coach and nominating him.”
